In September, we started on a journey to find the perfect family shampoo, for all members of the family. We knew that it was not going to be easy, since we all have different hair types and needs, but we decided to try, nonetheless.
A few of the things we had to consider were:
- We had to look for shampoos that would be suitable for all hair types.
- We had to focus on shampoos and conditioners that used mild, natural ingredients that would not affect sensitive skin or allergies.
- We had to choose ranges that would moisturise and hydrate hair while not making hair feel heavy and oily.
- We had to consider shampoos with scents that would suit the whole family.
Here is what we found:
Medium to High End Shampoos and Conditioners
Naturalmente ‘Nature Inside’ Range
Definitely one of my favourite ranges, we all love LOVED this gorgeous, natural shampoo and conditioner. Created by an Italian stylist, this range smells amazing and natural! It is 100% botanical and cruelty-free. The Shampoos and Conditioners cost around R450 each.
“Naturalmente” translated into English is, “as one would expect”.
Developed by an Italian stylist over 20 years ago, and produced in Italy, their hair care range is in a class of its own.
Naturalmente targets specific hair care needs, providing nourishment, hydration and vitamins, gentle enough for the most sensitive scalp, loved by families and hairstylists alike.
Naturalmente only utilises the highest quality, natural ingredients for extraordinary results.
Honour your body, protect your health and the earth and shine at the same time!

Loma Range
Another of our favourites, this is a natural range which is perfect for our allergen-sensitive household. They are gluten and soy free, and they are also cruelty-free. They go for about R580 for both the shampoo and conditioner. We were sent these by hairhousewarehouse.co.za, so do check them out, they have a wide range of hair care products at great prices.
With a heartfelt vision, Loma’s founder, David, curated a line of aromatic, organically infused products, envisioning a brand that prioritizes the well-being of his daughter Franky, her friends, and their families, free from harmful substances like parabens, dioxanes, phthalates, hormones, pesticides, and more.

Low to Medium End Ranges
nu-Hair Protein Booster Range
The nu-Hair Shampoo and Conditioners are sulphate and colourant free. They have a wide range of products to cover the whole family’s needs. The nu-Hair range starts from about R120 and they have wonderful ingredients in these products, like Peppermint oil and Vitamin E. I actually enjoyed the combo of the shampoo and moisturising masque. The moisturising masque can be left on for just a few minutes, or you can keep it on longer as a hair mask, to deeply moisturise the hair.
Placent Treatment
nu-Hair Placenta with Biotin Hair formula has been scientifically formulated to condition and strengthen limp, dry and damaged hair. It will also assist with poor scalp conditions. This formulation is alcohol free so it will not dry out the hair. Placenta is a rich source of proteins, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and nutrients.

EcoDiva pHresh Shampoo and Conditioner Combo
This is the perfect shampoo in the sense that it is animal-testing free, vegan, and has a lush variety of ingredients, including jojoba oil and argan oil. However, the conflicting purposes of shampoo and conditioner, makes it not work well for me – it was a bit to heavy for my hair. HOWEVER, please take this tip: This combo is perfect to use after hair removal. I found that it reduced redness and ingrown hairs, so there you go (said in my best BF Greek wedding voice)! This product costs around R220.
This 100% natural and vegan formula is completely free from chemical nasties, making it safe for pregnancy and baby. With just one wash, you can refresh, revive and add volume, shine, and manageability to your hair.

Base Ranges
RevlonFlex Range
The basic Revlon Flex range has a variety of options that would be suitable for the whole family. They cost between R50 – R80. They do contain sulphates, so if that is something you are trying to avoid, just be aware of that, but that do work pretty well.
AVAILABLE AT: Dischem, Clicks, Amazon
Other Products
We were also sent travel sized Ginger Shampoo and Conditioner from the Body Shop. They are another more natural range which I was able to enjoy but we haven’t tested it on the whole family. The dermatologically tested Ginger Haircare range is a range that is suitable for sensitive scalps.
Enriched with natural ginger essential oil, the new and improved vegan formula now offers hair density benefits through the addition of a Ginger Root Density Complex within the Scalp Serum. This powerful synergy of bio-actives includes ginger root essential oil from Madagascar, Chinese skullcap, soy, and wheat sprout.
