I don't usually post on a Sunday, but this has bee I don't usually post on a Sunday, but this has been something on my heart recently. A while ago, someone I cared about and respected very much asked me why I couldn't just sit in the corner and keep quiet. This was a man who I had admired for many years and in a few minutes, that was all lost. As we near Women's Day, I find myself thinking about that experience, thinking about why I will never be quiet when I feel I should speak up, thinking about times in the past that I regret not speaking up, and learning about speaking up in the right way (I'm a work in progress). You see, when we speak up we are not only doing it for ourselves or the people there, we are doing it for all women of all races. There are better ways of doing it. Len Goodman said: "You have to speak your mind, but without being cruel." and I agree with that. We need to speak up boldly, firmly and bravely, but at the same time remember that we are speaking to another person, another child of God. I have much to learn on this journey, but I am grateful for what I have learned along the way. I am grateful for those who paved the way before me so that I can now vote and own property. I am also grateful for those who have stood up for me even when it was difficult to do so. May both men and women learn to love and respect each other more, and may the women of South Africa no longer be a statistic but be honoured and appreciated as mothers, sisters, wives, aunties and business women and more.
