Put your feet up, love the earth & lift your community!

I have been very quiet the last few weeks. I have, in part, been preparing for our Gift Guide (Yay!). I have also been completing our final web design projects for the year. On top of that, I have been very privileged to assist in various community projects and although, if I’m honest, I am quite tired – my heart is full! Christmas is all about giving. It is all about love, and hope, and joy. What brings me the greatest joy is being in the community, being with people and helping them grow and progress, helping them find that joy and that hope. So, for the first day of our Gift Guide, I have decided to focus on a community project that is earth-friendly as well.

John Singano Footstools

You may remember that we featured the Re.Bag.Re.UseTM initiative last year on our Christmas Gift Guide where women are recycling plastic bags and making beautiful and functional bags. Sometimes, they also use the tape from VHS tapes but, unfortunately, they are left with the tape boxes which they can’t recycle.

Regine from the Re.Bag.Re.Use initiative shared the following:

The Re.Bag.Re.UseTM team, crochets beautiful multifunctional items from the tape itself. Going a step further to use the entire VHS tape, the Re.Bag.Re.Use team has found a way to use the empty video tapes as well. VHS and cassette tapes are in most cases non-recyclable or not accepted by recyclers, therefore repurposing this material is the next best sustainable option.

For quite some time I have been worrying about all the empty VHS video cases that we are generating. The main reason being, it’s one of those awful plastics that can’t be recycled and will potentially end up in landfill when they are not repurposed. Footstools is one of the solutions that we have come up with to repurpose empty VHS boxes!

Giving VHS tapes a second lease on life

John Singano, local upholsterer in Imizamo Yetho (Hout Bay), is the talent behind the footstools. It is because of John’s skill in upholstery, that old video tapes are no longer landing up in landfill. These tapes are now being repurposed into beautiful footstools, forming part of the Re.Bag.Re.UseTM initiative.

When Regine first asked me for a quote to upholster the footstools made from VHS tapes I was so excited. Instead of throwing something away, we can turn it into something that people can love. As an upholsterer, we are often left with a lot of material offcuts that are too small for other projects and the material gets thrown away. But now, we can use these off cuts to cover the VHS footstools. Nothing goes to waste!
