If you are in Gauteng and you are looking for a place to spend the day with your family, Melville Koppies may be the perfect location.
Melville Koppies is a 50ha Nature Reserve and Joburg Heritage site in the middle of Joburg. This well-maintained urban reserve has 3 billion year-old rock formations, rocky ridges, forests, grasslands and even a bubbling spruit (little stream). The panoramic views from the highest ridge are a wow factor. The archaeological site has relics of the early farmers who once lived here and visitors can even grind some sorghum on original grindstones. Melville Koppies is an ideal Green Therapy outing for the whole family. Families can do the 5km hiking trail, a self-guided trail or just meander the clearly marked trails.
Guided tours are available at R100 per person. They start at 8am and you will need to book.
Entrance into the Nature Reserve is R90 per person and R50 for those under 18. This money is used for maintenance of the Koppies by the volunteer committee. Secure parking is available opposite the entrance at Marks Park Sports Club in Judith Road, Emmarentia. As with all places, stick to the trails and go in a group but, most importantly, enjoy exploring the outdoors with your family.
