As we come to the end of term 1, you may be feeling a little overwhelmed or maybe a little worried. You may wonder if you are doing enough to help with your child’s education and, mommy, let me tell you – you are. You are doing just fine. The school holidays are a time to relax and spend time with your family and I have the perfect idea to help you have fun, spend time together as a family, and help your child stretch their brain! I have two super fun games to share with you and you can take them on the road, if you are travelling.
Bananagrams
We have shared this game before but it’s worth a repeat. This game is a super fun word game that can be played at the level your child is at which makes it perfect for a family game and ensures no-one will get bored. Ideal for kids who are starting to read, this game will help them to grow their vocabulary and see how words are put together. This game is also great for teens, who will love playing this game at a fast pace to beat their opponents.
Azul
This is another game that is perfect for all different ages. It is set for ages 8 and up and is a great game to help kids understand logic, providing a wonderful basis for maths and computer programming. I have to start by also saying that the minute I opened the game, my first thoughts were: “Wow, this is a beautiful game!” and it really is gorgeous. It comes with 100 colourful tiles (20 of each colour) and you are invited to “embellish the walls of the Royal Palace of Evora”. More than that, though, it is loads of fun and games are quick, so you can finish a game within half an hour, or play it over and over again if you have the time. There is also a variant option, or another way to play the game, to make it a little more challenging for older kids. This game comes with 4 player boards, so 4 people can play at a time or you can work in teams.
TIPS: Read the rule book (available in English and Afrikaans), this will help you understand the game. It will take a few minutes, but is also an important part of learning. If you have any questions about how to play the game, please feel free to pop them in the comments.
You can purchase both of these games from most major toy/game stores and online at places like takealot.com.
