How to feel like this most of the time!

You know what I am talking about…that wonderfully relaxed, happy feeling that quickly disappears soon after your holiday does. How can we keep that feeling…or at least…how can we not head in the opposite direction?

Here are some ideas on how to keep that holiday feeling:

  1. Don’t attach your happiness to things or anything that is temporary such as getting a raise, a new car, a new friend. What happens if that goes away?
  2. Be actively grateful. I have spoken about being grateful before, mentioned writing a gratitude journal but what does it mean to be actively grateful? It means getting yourself out there and saying “thank you” to everyone that makes a difference in your life. There is something magical about active gratitude.
  3. Spend time with people who lift you higher. Spend time with people who have the qualities you want to emulate. Research suggests that happiness and motivation is contagious, as is depression. If you have a family member living with you that seems to be struggling, sit down with them honestly and try to see how you can help them.
  4. Stress is inevitable, learn how to use it positively. Stress keeps us in motion, keeps us changing and growing. However, if there is some external cause of stress that you can eliminate, you should, but it’s important to learn techniques to protect your body and mind from the harmful effects of stress.
  5. Take some you time, some family time and leave the things “that cannot wait” to chill on the side. I am pretty sure the world will not come to a standstill and in the end you will be more productive and happy. Take some time to work in the garden, read a book, dance, go for a walk in the mountains, run…whatever works for you and then make some time for your family.

Do all of these things and you will find it easier to keep that holiday feeling. Tell us what works for you in the comments below. Enjoy the holidays!
