Heritage Day is held on the 24 September every year and recognises / celebrates the cultural wealth of our nation.
South Africans celebrate the day by remembering the cultural heritage of the many cultures that make up the population of South Africa.
This year there are a few activities/places that you can visit free of charge to celebrate Heritage Day and all the wonderful cultures that make up our beautiful country!
In_herit Festival at the Iziko Museums (Cape Town)
Entrance to the Iziko South African Museum, Slave Lodge, Bo-Kaap Museum, Groot Constantia Manor House and Castle of Good Hope will be free on the 24 September.
Heritage Month has brought a full programme to Iziko Museums of South Africa for their annual in_herit FESTIVAL culminating in a packed Heritage weekend (Friday 23 and Saturday 24 September) in which the diversity of South African culture and its natural environment will be explored.
Event highlights include a tour and artist walkabout of the exhibition PLOT: Critical Zones, by Jeannette Unite and a public discussion by world renowned artist Zakes Mda. There will be live music from jazz icon Mama Sylvia Ncediwe Mdunyelwa, indigenous games for all to enjoy, drum majorettes and plenty of exciting activities for children, teens and adults that explore space, science, edible insects, honeybees and more.
The programme is concentrated at the Iziko South African Musuem located at the Company Gardens with some events at the Iziko Slave Lodge (within walking distance) and Friday’s event taking place in the Central Library
All the activities are free and access to all museums is *free on Heritage Day (24 September).
*This does not however include the Planetarium and Digital Dome, or any of the museums usually closed on a Saturday, as well as those closed for maintenance and repairs. The Iziko South African National Gallery is temporarily closed as part of the ISANG Revitalisation project. Entrance to the Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome, is R60 for adults and R30 for children.
Free Entrance to Freedom Park (Pretoria)
Freedom Park houses a museum and a memorial dedicated to chronicling and honouring the many who contributed to South Africa’s liberation. The museum aims to preserve and narrate the story of the African continent, and specifically South Africa. On Heritage day, entrance will be free.

Valley Heritage Market (Hout Bay)
It is free to attend this Heritage Day market, and it’s the perfect activity for the whole family. The market will be held at the Valley Pre-Primary and the Denis Goldberg Foundation in Hout Bay. There will be magic shows, face painting, jumping castles and plenty to eat.
