Child-friendly Décor Ideas: Chalkboard Wall

My daughter has always drawn on the walls and I don’t have a problem with it, in fact I encourage her to! I know what you must be thinking, my house must be a mess with all the crayon drawings on the wall but that’s not quite what I mean. My daughter has always had a chalkboard wall. Strangely, and maybe because of that, I don’t remember her ever drawing on the walls with crayon. Maybe, in her mind, that was silly because everyone KNOWS you draw on the walls with chalk not crayon (haha). It has always been something the kids run to when she has friends over. I mean, you get to draw ALL over the wall – how fun! Initially, we had a black chalkboard wall. While this was funky, it was a bit dark and it was not very easy to bring a whole black wall into a bedroom theme she liked, décor wise. Black is great, though, for other rooms/spaces in the house. Chalkboard walls make great accent walls, as well, which can separate zones in your home.

Colourful Chalkboard Walls

So, we did some investigating and there are so many colours you can use for your chalkboard wall! When my daughter got a bit older, we decided to go royal blue. Other colours you can use for your chalkboard wall are green, red, turquoise, light blue, yellow and even pink! Different hardware stores have different options, and you can also purchase it online. However, be aware that chalk (or chalky) paint is different from chalkboard paint. Chalk paint is a paint with more of a matte finish which often requires little preparation – great product, but not what you will need for a chalkboard wall! You want to get CHALKBOARD paint, if it doesn’t say board in it, look for something else.

Easy to Clean

Chalkboard walls are really easy to clean. Once your kids have finished with their chalkboard creations, you can just wipe down the wall with a damp cloth. For a clean, fresh finish; you can also mix one part vinegar with four parts water and clean the wall with that solution (instead of plain warm water).

Finding the Right Person for the Job

We’ve been thinking of changing the colour and décor recently, but we have been so busy with work and school. I was wondering how we could do it. During lockdown we all had more time at home, so it was easy to complete projects like this. Now that we are all heading back to the office, it is getting a little more difficult. Even when we are working from home, it is hard to balance our busy end-of-year schedules and still make time for our DIY projects. I realised that we need a little help.

What usually happens is that we head over to our favourite, local online group and we ask for recommendations for painters and handymen. The problem is, people often recommend themselves and we have no way of knowing who will do the highest quality job at the best price. I know this, not only because I see this happen to other people all the time, but also because I was recently looking for a handyman to complete some jobs at my parents home. When requesting referrals, most people shared their own business details. Since my parents live in a different area, it was hard to know who would do a great job and would be trustworthy as well.
