Since it’s Autumn and we have a few more sunny days left, it is the perfect time to get out in nature and have a picnic and nothing is more delicious than baking your own bread to add to it. I first learned how to bake this bread during the pandemic with my daughter and her cooking class – what wonderful and dedicated teachers she had! Since then, we have made it over and over again (and we make the allergy-friendly version too!). So here is the recipe so you can try it out too.

Home-made Bread
Ingredients
- 500g Bread Flour (you can use Cake Flour if that’s all you have)
- 25ml Castor Sugar (you can use regular Sugar if that’s all you have)
- 6.25ml Salt
- 6.25ml Active Dried Yeast
- 50g Butter
- 25ml Milk Powder (optional)
- 350ml Lukewarm Water
- Milk (for the top)
- Seeds (optional – for top)
Instructions
- Sift Flour into mixing bowl.
- Add Castor Sugar and Salt to mixing bowl.
- Add Active Dried Yeast to mixing bowl, sprinkle all over the bowl/flour.
- Cut Butter into smaller pieces and add to the bowl.
- Add Lukewarm Water to the bowl and mix gently until just combined.
- Empty everything onto your table.
- Work from the outside in and bring your dough together.
- Knead your bread for 10 minutes.
- Prove bread for 30 minutes, cover in Bonnie Bio Cling Wrap and a kitchen towel. Place in warm part of the kitchen.
- Knead your dough again. Place in greased pan and prove again for 30 minutes.
- Coat the top with Milk using a pastry brush and add seeds on top, if desired.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes at 200° Celsius.
I love using the Bonnie Bio Cling Wrap for proving the dough and for wrapping the sandwiches for our picnic. I also usually take the Bonnie Bio Straws and Cups with us for guilt free convenience.
Bonnie Bio certified compostable straws perform like traditional plastic straws, but decompose like paper straws (without leaching the bleach that paper straws do – yes the paper used to make paper straws has been bleached). Enjoy sipping your slushies, thick milkshakes, pulp fruit juice and icy cocktails with a clear conscience about polluting the environment, as these Bonnie Bio certified compostable straws, specifically designed for such beverages, decompose naturally.
