Recently, we embarked on another train trip to Elgin with the Ceres Rail Company, this time in a different compartment. There is nothing better than drinking a hot cup of Rooibos tea as you are lulled by the rock of the train as it travels over the tracks. The misty morning transported us back in time as we passed countless, different scenes framed by the train windows with the occasional whistle bringing us back to the 21st Century. It’s an experience! An experience you HAVE to try at least once.
We took a friend and his son with us this time. His son had not been well for a little while and is OBSESSED with trains. He can tell you everything there is to know about trains and it was a very educational trip! Rina saw his passion for trains and arranged for him to drive the train with Oom Jan (at least, I think that was his name 🫣), the driver, and it absolutely made his day. We couldn’t help but get a little emotional when we saw him ‘drive’ past us. The Ceres Rail Company has such a friendly, helpful team and they always ensure we have a fantastic time. We are so grateful for the special memories they have been a part of.
The train stops at the Elgin Railway Market where you can eat lunch and shop the local market. We found some lovely items, including some very large blueberries fresh from the farm; they tasted like candy! On the way back, we rested and took in the views while our friends explored the train and stopped at the snack car. Watch our video of our friend’s son driving the train, below:
The journey departs from Harbour Bridge Platform (close to the Cape Town International Convention Centre), and meanders through Cape Town and its surrounds until reaching the majestic Sir Lowrys Pass. Arriving at the foot of the pass, the train embarks on an epic climb up one of the steepest railway lines in South Africa. Cresting the peak, the train snakes it way into the lush Elgin Valley before arriving at the Elgin Railway Market.
Onboard our train, guests can enjoy the wonderful scenery from various seating options whilst. . .snacking in our dining car.
