Chewing on Muesli

Yesterday was my mother-in-law’s birthday and we met together at a restaurant to celebrate another year with her. My in-law’s are very quick to pick up on things and always leave us in stitches.

We were discussing my latest health kick and I was saying how I was getting used to eating Low GI Muesli in the mornings again (something I used to love but have since changed to not eating breakfast at all!). To be honest, it feels like a bit of a chore (though, I shouldn’t complain). My brother-in-law said that if you eat that and then salad for lunch, with all that chewing you land up with lockjaw at supper time (complete with facial expressions – you had to be there! Hy-ster-i-cal).

After supper, a little boy (well, really, I think he could be called a young man) came to our table with his mom. He had heard us softly singing happy birthday and wanted to sing “Happy Birthday” to the birthday girl too. Such a sweet, sincere young man. Such a touching moment! With all the bad that happens in the world, moments like this remind us that there are indeed good people in the world and we need to focus on that, nurture that and build that up.

I read this morning a suggestion, go through the day without complaining and see how things change. I would say go a step further: when you feel like complaining, think about something you are grateful for. I know this may be difficult at first (a bit like chewing on muesli in the morning) but I do think it can make a difference.

If you find that you are unhappy, not necessarily complaining, take a moment to think about why you are unhappy. Make time to re-evaluate where you are. This life is a time when we should be experiencing joy, not without trials but we should be happy (at least for the most part).

I would like to celebrate good people everywhere, trying today to better than they were yesterday.
