It seems to be the new “it” word in the Beauty World but what exactly is BB Cream?
BB creams often contain:
- Anti-aging components, including peptides and antioxidants such as vitamins A, E, and C
- Moisturizing workhorses like hyaluronic acid and glycerin
- Ingredients such as licorice and arbutin that help even out skin tone
- Light-reflecting mica to give skin a luminous finish
- Silicone-based ingredients, such as dimethicone, that help smooth the skin, acting much like a foundation primer does
Wikipedia says:
BB cream stands for blemish balm, blemish base, beauty balm or beblesh balm. BB cream is promoted as an all-in-one facial cosmetic product to replace serum, moisturizer, primer, foundation, and sunblock. It can be worn alone as a tinted moisturizer, over serum and moisturizer as a regular foundation, and under powder, depending on the desired amount of coverage
So basically, it is an all-in-one that saves you time and is suitable for all occasions?
Janna Mandell disagrees, she says:
Think about it… If you apply a dime size of BB Cream (which is a generous portion), how is it going to have enough active ingredients, hydrators, and most importantly, sunscreen to care for your face? “BB Creams are a brilliant marketing concept, however one cream that fits all is a false notion,” said Los Angeles-based Celebrity Dermatologist Dr. Harold Lancer. “There is some modest benefit-moisturizing, but should not be the end all of the fountain of youth and certainly should not replace any other vital steps in skincare.”
The conclusion is that BB creams won’t replace every product in your skin care regimen but they can help those products work more effectively. By itself, a pea-sized dab of BB cream (that’s all you need) can provide just the right amount of coverage for a casual day and can be a fantastic time-saver.
